This is an update to my November 2004 review of this product:

After 19 months of use, the mouse was showing some signs of wear. While it still worked very well, it looked to me like the 4 pads on the underside of the mouse (where it contacts the desk surface) were beginning to wear and the mouse wasn’t sliding quiet as buttery-smoothe as it did originally. I could have lived with this for a LONG time, but since these mice are so cheap (a little over ), I decided to replace it. I replaced it with the SAME identical model because it is still a perfect mouse and I can’t imagine anything I’d like better.

I don’t really get the negative reviews for this mouse. It has worked flawlessly and has just the right functions and touch/feel for me.

(BTW, I was kinda lazy and tried to just substitute the new mouse for the old mouse, without replacing the receiver. That did not work; apparently the mouse is matched to its receiver. No problem … it took an additional 5 minutes to crawl under the desk and unplug the old receiver from the USB port and plug in the new one.)

Here is my original review from Nov 2004:

I just received and installed this mouse. So, my rating does not reflect any experience with long-term use or durability.

My old Dell-branded Intellimouse was wearing out, so I bought a new Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 (an optical mouse). It worked fine but I hated the feel of the wheel button. I am addicted to using the wheel button as a double click. The feel of the wheel button was very heavy, requiring a very heavy press, and so basically ruined its functionality as a double click button.

I set it aside and bought a new MS Standard Wireless Optical Mouse. Beware, the Control Panel Mouse setup lists 85 million different models of Microsoft mouse, but not this one. Indeed none of the drivers would work fully. I had to download a driver (Intellimouse 5.2) from the MS website, before I could fully configure this MS Standard Wireless Optical Mouse.

I really didn’t want a USB connector (the Wireless Intellimouse Explorer came with an adaptor that allowed the USB connector to plug into the regular PS/2 mouse port on the back of the computer. I tried the adaptor on the new mouse but it didn’t seem to work.) However, it works fine off of my USB hub and I guess I can live with whatever problems that may present. I may hang on to my old wire-connected mouse in case I need it for backup.

Also, this is your basic two-button+wheel mouse. It does not have the fancy extra side buttons of the Intellimouse Explorer and others 2.0. But I was not really interested in those anyway.

The new Standard Wireless Optical Mouse has a really nice light feel, better than any mouse I’ve owned. It performs smoothly and flawlessley and fits my somewhat-smaller-than-average hand very well.

They are dirt cheap and work beautifully. So go for it.

Rating:
Logitech’s V220 is ergonomically designed and has soft rubber grips on both sides. It uses one AA battery, which is nice, you don’t have to scour the planet trying to find the right battery to use. The tilt wheel is large, making it easy to operate. The left and right mouse buttons operate smoothly. There is a battery warning LED which is green if the battery is good and turns red when the battery is low. This is a great feature. Another thing I love about this product is the off/on switch on the bottom of the mouse. If you are going to be typing or reading for a while and won’t be needing to use the mouse, you can simply turn it off and save battery life. The receiver slides into the bottom of the mouse and is designed to turn off the mouse when you slide it in and turn on the mouse when you slide it out.

The only complaint I have is the instruction pamphlet could have been a little clearer about which way to install the battery. The diagram shows the stud of the positive end of the battery going first into the mouse but it has a very small (-) sign on the end with a small (+) side on the other end. A quick glance leads you to put the positive end first just by how the drawing looks.

I purchased a bargain store brand cordless mouse that was much smaller, had a tiny tilt wheel with an automatic shut off that allows the battery to run down for several minutes before shutting off. The Logitech V220, for the same price, puts the bargain brands to shame. It’s the only cordless notebook mouse you will ever need.

I’m a computer junkie, i have to admit that I fall for every gadget and gimmick that comes along when it comes to computer hardware. This was no exception. I recently picked up a new laptop and thought i’d compliment it with a new mouse. Whilst shopping, I noticed this little fellow on sale and thought what a great idea… the usb transmitter snaps in to the bottom of the mouse (also shuts it off so its not burning up the battery). Unfortunately the store that I spotted it at had sold out! I asked the clerk and he said the things were flyin off the shelves. Figured it must be worth a look so I went a few doors down to a competitor and found one.

Great thing about buying hardware from the evil empire (Microsoft), is that it pretty much all works without downloading new drivers. Plugged the USB transmitter in, snapped the included single AA battery in the mouse (its located under the top cover btw if you dont like reading instructions like me), and it fired to life. Nice smooth tracking, worked on all surfaces i tested except for the actual screen of my laptop.. hehe

All I cared about was to have an ultra-portable mouse that was wireless and worked well. I got the great bonus of, good price, easy to install, great function, perfect compatability. If it had two tumb buttons for fwd/back on web browsing, i’d write microsoft a thank you letter.
